Biography

Professor Dave Szalay has been teaching a range of design and illustration courses at the Myers School of Art since 2005. He is an award-winning illustrator/designer, and writer. He spent the first half of his career in graphic design, creative direction, and branding for a broad spectrum of fortune 500 businesses and notable institutions. 

Szalay has been awarded at the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators at the national portfolio showcase, and numerous times by the local and regional American Advertising Awards, 3 x 3 Magazine, Creative Quarterly, the Ohio Arts Council, Highlights Magazine, and many children’s book competitions nationwide.

His work has been featured or included in collections at The Museum of American Illustration, The Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art, The Mazza Museum, The Society of IIlustrators in Los Angeles, The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, The Library of Congress, The Akron Art Museum, The Summit County Library collection, and more. 

Dave loves stories of history and culture, as much as fantasy and folklore. He has illustrated for dozens of editorial magazine assignments as well as 8 commercial picture books with more forthcoming. Recent clients include Harper Collins, Little Brown, Penguin Random House, Charlesbridge, Nord-Sud/NorthSouth Books, Sleeping Bear Press, Simon & Schuster, Cricket Media, Highlights Magazine, McGraw-Hill, Harcourt-Mifflin, The Boston Globe, The Downtown Akron Partnership, Northeast Ohio College of Medicine, and The National Parks Service.
