When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Students who want to apply for scholarships should visit the scholarship page on the Financial Aid site. You can find the link for the online application here.
The Department of Development does not accept applications for or distribute scholarships. Scholarships are distributed through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.

Pry, Russell M. Endowed Memorial Scholarship
The Russell M. Pry Endowed Memorial Scholarship was established in 2017 through the leadership of the City of Akron Mayor Daniel Horrigan and Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro, along with the support of family and friends and members of the City of Akron and Summit County communities. It honors the memory of a brother, great friend, loyal Democrat, incredibly smart man and genuine good guy who worked hard to make his community a better place, Summit County Executive Russell M. Pry.
Russ was a dedicated public servant who was committed to improving local economic development outcomes and transformational leadership, while serving the needs of constituents. He was a lifelong citizen of Summit County, earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Kent State University and Juris Doctorate from The University of Akron School of Law in 1984.
During Russ’s lifetime, he enjoyed success as an attorney, two-time Mogadore Village Councilmember, chair of the Summit County Democratic Party, member of the Summit County Board of Elections and for the last nine years of his life served as the Summit County Executive. Russ was a leader, advocate, conciliator and friend to many.
The Russell M. Pry Endowed Memorial Scholarship is designated for students enrolled full-time or part-time in The University of Akron School of Law. Potential candidates must be graduates of a Summit County School District and have demonstrated a commitment to community service. Preference will be given to students on the basis of financial need. The scholarship will be awarded annually by The University of Akron School of Law’s Scholarship Committee. Recipient(s) may not receive the scholarship as a stipend or refund.
