When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Students who want to apply for scholarships should visit the scholarship page on the Financial Aid site. You can find the link for the online application here.
The Department of Development does not accept applications for or distribute scholarships. Scholarships are distributed through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.

Emanuel, John D. Endowed Scholarship/Award
In April 2018, Joseph D. Emanuel established The John D. Emanuel Endowed Scholarship/Award in memory of his father, John D. Emanuel. Joseph Emanuel graduated from The University of Akron School of Law in 1988 and currently serves as Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, Global Businesses for Prudential Financial in Newark, New Jersey.
Mr. Emanuel established The John D. Emanuel Endowed Scholarship/Award to assist with Akron Law’s efforts to recruit and educate students, particularly those interested in pursuing careers in international law.
The John D. Emanuel Endowed Scholarship/Award will provide scholarship assistance directly to student accounts to cover expenses such as tuition and fees. Other funding not applied to a student’s account may be used for students’ study abroad awards. Study abroad awards may cover the cost of travel expenses, room and board and other program costs.
Consideration for the scholarship/award will be given to one or more Akron Law students demonstrating an interest in international law. The scholarship may be awarded to U.S. students intending to work in international law. It shall be distributed to students who are from the following geographic areas, in order of preference: (1) Trumbull County, Ohio; (2) Northeast Ohio; (3) Ohio; (4)
Recipient selection and scholarship/award amounts will be determined annually by the dean of the School of Law and approved by Mr. Emanuel, or his designee. Strong consideration will be given to students who have demonstrated financial need, strong academic merit and a commitment to community service.
