Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Gowins, Ty Endowed Scholarship for Baseball

The Ty Gowins Endowed Scholarship for Baseball was established at The University of Akron by Jerry "Ty" Gowins in 2021, to support fellow Zips baseball program members and in recognition of the University's Sesquicentennial Anniversary.

Ty attended The University of Akron and was an accomplished student-athlete, pitching for the °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ Zips Baseball team prior to graduating from the College of Business with a degree in Marketing and Sales Technology in 1985. He went 6-0 and set a record for six consecutive wins in a season in 1982 and went on to be named Pitcher of the Year in 1983. Ty may not have been able to attend °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ were it not for baseball and the scholarship awarded to him and wants to assist students in the same way.

The Ty Gowins Endowed Scholarship for Baseball will be awarded to an active pitcher on The University of Akron Men's Baseball team. Recipients must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA). Recipient selection will be made by the Zips Baseball coaching staff in conjunction with the Zips Athletics Department.
