Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Zips on the Rise Scholarship
At The University of Akron, we all rise together, and it has been that way since our beginning in 1870.
The Zips on the Rise Scholarship was established in 2020 in celebration of The University of Akron’s 150th Sesquicentennial Anniversary, honoring the spirit and passion of yesterday’s and today’s Zips who seize the moment and do whatever it takes to rise, and then keep rising.
University of Akron students who are in good academic standing are eligible for consideration for the Zips on the Rise Scholarship. Recipients will represent a cross section of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ students with a focus on adversity met and challenges overcome by their grit and hard work.
Recipients will be selected by the University Scholarship Committee with recommendations by the provost and his/her designee(s) and the president and his/her designee(s). These Sesquicentennial “Zips on the Rise” Scholars will be spotlighted throughout the University’s Sesquicentennial year.
Selection of up to 150 recipients will be initiated for the 2020/2021 academic year with each recipient receiving up to $2,500 for the year. The number of scholarships and the amount of each will be based on available funds. At the discretion of the University Scholarship Committee, the number of recipients and the amount they receive could change as funds are available. Providing that funds are available, the scholarship is renewable annually three times for a total of four years if recipients remain in good academic standing.
