Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Kramer, Zachary A. Memorial Scholarship/Award

The Zachary A. Kramer Memorial Scholarship/Award was established at The University of Akron in 2023 and has been funded with gifts from friends and family of Zachary Kramer. The award supports undergraduate students seeking a bachelor's degree in sport studies who exemplify altruistic characteristics.

Zach Kramer passed away unexpectedly on February 18, 2014. He was only 24 years old. Zach was a graduate of Wadsworth High School and The University of Akron, where he received a bachelor's degree in sports management in 2013.

Zach worked as a custodian at Copley-Fairlawn High School, and was passionate about health and fitness and helping others fulfill their potential both in and out of the gym. Zach is remembered by many as a selfless individual who considered the welfare of others and would have given the shirt off his back to someone in need.

The Zachary A. Kramer Memorial Scholarship/Award provides assistance to an undergraduate student with financial need who is enrolled in the Sport Studies Program. Eligible candidates should demonstrate outstanding personal characteristics, including a strong work ethic, dedication to service and a commitment to campus involvement. Potential candidates will be identified by the University Scholarship Committee and shared with James Kramer. Within two weeks of receiving the information, Mr. Kramer will provide any feedback on potential recipients with final selection made by the University Scholarship Committee.

In addition to being applied to a student's account for tuition, fees and e-books, the award may be used for books and required course materials. Funds used for expenses other than qualified educational expenses are reportable and may be taxable to the recipient.

To make a tax-deductible gift to this scholarship, please visit °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ’s . Select “A different designation” from the drop-down menu and enter “Zachary Kramer Scholarship” in the text box. Thank you!
