Waltermire, Emma Barack Scholarship in Education
The Emma Barack Waltermire Scholarship in Education was established in January 2023 by her son and University of Akron Trustee, Thomas A. Waltermire, as part of the We Rise Together Campaign for The University of Akron (°µºÚ±¬ÁÏ).
Emma graduated from The University of Akron in 1932 as secretary of her class and a member of The Mortar Board Honor Society with a degree in physical education. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Emma was the daughter of Olga and Nicholas Barack, Serbian immigrants who made their way to Columbus after arriving to the United States through Ellis Island. Understanding the importance of education, Emma was determined to achieve hers and encouraged the same passion among her children. Through this scholarship, Emma's dedication will continue to inspire current and future °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ students to reach their full potential.
The Emma Barack Waltermire Scholarship in Education shall be awarded to full- or part-time students in °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ's LeBron James Family Foundation School of Education. First preference will be given to students who are first-generation U.S. Citizens or resident aliens or are the children of first-generation U.S. Citizens or resident aliens. Recipients shall be selected by The University of Akron Scholarship Committee in the Office of Student Financial Aid and funds may be used to cover tuition and fees as well as on-campus room and board and meal plans.
