White, Jeanette Memorial Scholarship

Mrs. Edna Jeannette Murie White began her college career at Ohio University in 1940 and graduated from The University of Akron in 1964, magna cum laude, with a bachelor of arts degree in education.  Mrs. White devoted 19 years to the accounting and business education programs at Akron East High School. In 2005, Mrs. White was made an honorary alumna of The University of Akron School of Law, and in October 2008, she was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from The University of Akron.

Mrs. White was committed to Akron Public Schools and higher education. At The University of Akron, she left an indelible mark on campus and on students through her support. She was instrumental in the refurbishment of Buchtel Hall and Hower House and endowed scholarships in the School of Law and College of Nursing. She was a strong advocate for education until her death in November 2008.

The recipient of The Jeannette White Memorial Scholarship must be a graduate of East High School and must be enrolled full time at The University of Akron or Ohio University. The scholarship may be renewed, and the recipient will be chosen based on scholastic achievement and community involvement or extracurricular activities at East High School, The University of Akron, or Ohio University.

The principal or guidance counselor of East High School and a close friend of Mrs. White, Judge Jane Bond, shall choose the scholarship recipient annually.
