Richards, Dr. A. M. Richards ’48 and Nina Mamay ’49 Endowed Scholarship in Civil Engineering, Biology and Music

The Dr. A. M. Richards ’48 and Nina Mamay Richards ’49 Endowed Scholarship in Civil Engineering, Biology and Music was established in 1996 by University of Akron graduates Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Richards and revised in 2017. 

Dr. Richards was a faculty member of The University of Akron Department of Civil Engineering from 1949 to 1983.  At the College of Engineering’s 75th anniversary celebration in 1990, the college honored Dr. Richards with its highest distinction, presenting him the Outstanding Teacher Award. 

Nina Mamay Richards earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at The University of Akron in 1949 and a master’s in education in 1980.  She was a bacteriologist for the City of Akron until 1954 and taught microbiology at Cuyahoga Falls High School from 1973 to 1983.

The Richards’ children received degrees at The University of Akron.  Their daughter, Karen, earned a bachelor’s degree in music in 1976, and son, Martin, earned bachelors and master’s degrees in music in 1977 and 1980.  

The Dr. A. M. Richards ’48 and Nina Mamay Richards ’49 Endowed Scholarship provides awards supporting three academic programs (one each) to be distributed to students in the Department of Civil Engineering, the Department of Biology, and the School of Music.    

Scholarship consideration will be given to students who are:

  • U.S. Citizens
  • Full-time undergraduate students pursuing degree(s) offered by the Departments of Civil Engineering, Department of Biology and School of Music
  • Academically talented and personally motivated to join the broad intellectual life that is offered by the Department of Civil Engineering, Department of Biology and School of Music
