Burg, H. Peter Personal Leadership and Development Speaker Series

The H. Peter Burg Personal Leadership and Development Speaker Series was created in 2012 with gifts from Mrs. Eileen E. Burg ’11 to provide an opportunity for University of Akron students to learn from local business and community service leaders. The guest speakers exemplify the qualities, ethics, and sense of public service demonstrated and valued by the late H. Peter Burg ’68, ’70, former CEO of FirstEnergy and treasured University of Akron alumnus.

Each lecture will feature speakers who will share their personal stories of business and civic leadership and success. The speakers will challenge the students to increase their commitment to civic service. The format of the series encourages students to actively participate and engage in candid conversation with speakers who will mentor them in a wide range of topics such as: developing strong character and values, personal accountability, identifying business goals, civic service and leadership, and a leader’s role in community engagement.

A native son of Akron, Mr. Burg had a special love for his community and his alma mater, The University of Akron, where he earned a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in 1968 and 1970, respectively. Mr. Burg led by example, endearing those around him with a style of leadership that incorporated the very best of what he learned from his own mentors. This lecture series was inspired by such experiences.
