Baker, Lieutenant Colonel Addison E. Memorial Scholarship

The endowed Lieutenant Colonel Addison E. Baker Memorial Scholarship was created by a gift to The University of Akron from Frances R. Merryweather in loving memory of her first husband, Addison Baker. Born in Chicago, Addison Baker was a decorated World War II Air Force officer. He commanded the 93rd Heavy Bombardment Group and was killed in the service of his country during a low-level attack against enemy oil refineries at Polesti, Romania, on August 1, 1943. Lieutenant Colonel Baker was accorded the Medal of Honor, this nation's highest military honor, on March 11, 1944. Mrs. Merryweather received her bachelor's degree from the College of Education at The University of Akron. This endowment is to benefit cadets who best display the Air Force's core values of integrity, courage, competence, and patriotism in their tenacious service to the cadet corps. Selection of award recipients is to be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid in consultation with the director of Aerospace Studies.
