Gertz, Sybil and Stanley Endowed Scholarship
The Sybil and Stanley Gertz Endowed Scholarship was established in 2007 out of the Gertz's desire to assist students pursuing degrees in Secondary Education at The University of Akron. As lifetime residents of Akron, the Gertz's recognize the importance of the University to the area's economic, cultural and social vibrancy. Mrs. Gertz, a 1947 alumna of the University's College of Education, went on to enjoy a 29-year career as an educator in the Akron Public Schools, teaching full time at East High School as well as Firestone High School, and many other schools during her years as a substitute teacher. Mindful of the positive impact educators have in the lives of children, the Gertz's generosity will support future generations of teachers who choose The University of Akron to pursue degrees in education.
Application for the scholarship is open to students majoring in Secondary Education who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in The University of Akron's College of Education, with preference given to students from Summit County. Scholarship recipients must maintain at least a 2.75 grade point average. Students may apply for renewal of the award provided the grade point level is maintained. Selection will be made by the Dean of the College of Education or appropriate designee.
