Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

In recognition of The University of Akron's 1501h Sesquicentennial Anniversary, Philip A. Lloyd established The Philip A. Lloyd Endowment for Zips in Need to support University of Akron students facing emergency financial circumstances.

Mr. Lloyd received his juris doctorate from The University of Akron School of Law in 1972 and spent his career practicing law, retiring from the law firm of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease LLP. Mr. Lloyd continues to lead The McDowell Family Company, LLC.

Mr. Lloyd, a 2008 recipient of the Outstanding Law Alumni Award, has been a member of The University of Akron Foundation Board of Directors since 1991, and currently serves as its chairman. He also is a charter member and past chairman of the School of Law Advancement Council.

Annual distributions from The Philip A. Lloyd Endowment for Zips in Need will be used for the following purposes:

The Philip A. Lloyd Retention Scholarship. This assistance shall be awarded to students experiencing a financial emergency with the objective of keeping them enrolled in school. Assistance may be directed toward tuition costs, fees, as well as room and board. Award decisions will be made by the Vice President for Student Affairs, or their designee.

The Philip A. Lloyd Fund for ZipAssist, providing emergency financial assistance to students experiencing emergency financial need. Such support includes but is not limited to expenses associated with childcare, food/meals, gas, housing/rent, medical/dental expenses, personal automobile expenses and utilities. This assistance is to help students overcome emergency financial hardships that might otherwise cause them to abandon college. Fund allocations will be made by the Vice President for Student Affairs, or their designee, in consultation with the Director of ZipAssist.

As needs vary for students, the Vice President for Student Affairs may use the distributions, as needed for the purposes noted above.
