Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Smucker, Paul H. Memorial Scholarship

The family of Paul H. Smucker established The Paul H. Memorial Smucker Scholarship in 1999 and revised it in 2015. Paul H. Smucker was chairman of the Executive Committee of the J.M. Smucker Company, and under Paul's guidance the company grew from a small, regional jam and jelly manufacturer to one of international scope.

The award will be made yearly to students at Wayne College. Qualified full-time students must be from the Wayne County area and working toward an associate, bachelor's, or master’s degree at Wayne College. Selection of the student will be based on need, academics, and community service. The recipient is to be chosen by a representative from The J.M. Smucker Company and a representative from Wayne College.

The Paul H. Memorial Smucker Scholarship was originated with gifts from family and friends of Paul H. Smucker. Interested parties may add additional gifts to the fund. The scholarship principal shall be held by The University of Akron Foundation according to the Foundation’s established guidelines and distributed for scholarship purposes on an annual basis. Unless there are mitigating circumstances, unexpended funds in the award account are to be returned to The Paul H. Smucker Memorial Scholarship each fiscal year. The scholarship awards should be a minimum of $1,500 each with at least four distributed annually.

Generally, distributions are not to be made from the principal should the fund’s market value fall below the historic gift value. If the market value should fall below the historic gift value in any given year, a representative from The University of Akron Foundation should contact the J. M. Smucker Company for direction as to whether the organization may want to make a gift to the award account or permit principal distributions.
