Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

Students who want to apply for scholarships should visit the scholarship page on the Financial Aid site. You can find the link for the online application here.
The Department of Development does not accept applications for or distribute scholarships. Scholarships are distributed through the University’s Office of Student Financial Aid.

Hayes, Michael T. Military Veterans Textbook Fund
The Michael T. Hayes Military Veterans Textbook Fund was created in August 2014 with a gift from Mr. Michael T. Hayes. Candidates and/or recipients may be from any branch of the U.S. military. First consideration will be given to those who have returned from active duty. The purpose of the fund is to assist veterans in the purchase of required textbooks as they begin or resume their studies at The University of Akron.
Application and approvals:
- Requests for textbook assistance may be submitted online or in writing
- The scholarship will be offered fall and spring semesters only (no summer sessions)
- A recipient may apply for the scholarship for a subsequent semester (i.e., he/she is not limited to one time only)
- Applications will be reviewed by a representative of the University’s Military Services Center and shared with Mr. Hayes. Final approval will be made by Student Financial Aid.
Who qualifies as a student-veteran for this fund?
- Anyone with veteran status who has not been dishonorably discharged
- Undergraduates or graduates in good academic standing
- Candidates enrolled for at least 12 credit hours during the semester for which they are applying
The Michael T. Hayes Military Veterans Textbook Fund was created in August 2014 (and revised in 2015) with a gift from Mr. Michael T. Hayes. Additional funds are welcome. The amount and number of awards will vary, depending on the amount of funds available, and the need and number of qualified applicants.
