Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Larson, Gordon Memorial Fund

Established in 2005 by family and friends, The Gordon Larson Memorial Fund honors the memory of Gordon K. Larson, respected coach, Athletic Director, and friend to so many during his lifetime as a member of the Akron community. An Akron native and graduate of South High School, Gordon Larson coached the Zips football program from 1961-1972, compiling a career record of 74-33-5. His .683 win percentage is the best in school history. Gordon Larson was named the Athletic Director at The University of Akron in 1970 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. As Athletic Director, he guided the Zips from the NCAA College Division to NCAA Division II and ultimately to NCAA Division I status. His vision and leadership were instrumental in a rapid expansion of physical facilities and the emergence of women’s sports.

The recipient of The Gordon Larson Memorial Fund must be eligible to compete as a first-year freshman football student-athlete under NCAA rules and be a person of integrity, willing to uphold the Larson legacy. The head football coach will have full authority in selecting the recipient.
