Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Holda, Ph.D., James H. Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Biology
The James H. Holda, Ph.D., Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Biology was established in 2022 by Sheri Holda and Ben Holda to honor and remember their husband and father, James H. Holda, Ph.D., who passed away unexpectedly in 2019. In creating this scholarship, Sheri and Ben desire to continue Dr. Holda's legacy of caring by providing financial opportunities that will help students focus on their academics and complete their degrees.
Dr. Holda joined The University of Akron Department of Biology in 1987 as an associate professor of Biology. For the next 32 years, he was intensely passionate about educating students in the study and application of microbiology, immunology, and epidemiology. Dr. Holda made a lasting impact on generations of biology and nursing students, as well as the Biology Department, during his time at the University. Additionally, his work impacted the health, comfort, and well-being of thousands. When Dr. Holda was not teaching, he loved to spend time with his family, ride his bicycle, watch classic comedies and films, and pursue knowledge in all things related to history.
