Named scholarships & funds

When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.

For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.

Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.

If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Belgya, Mark R. and Beverly E. Cap & Gown Scholarship

The Mark R. and Beverly E. Belgya Cap & Gown Scholarship was established in July 2018 by Mark ’82 ’93 and Beverly ’83 Belgya, both alumni of The University of Akron’s George W. Daverio School of Accountancy. It is their desire to help junior and senior students with financial challenges to complete their degrees. Mark and Beverly wish to support the efforts of hardworking students just as they had been supported throughout their higher education career.

Mark and Beverly met at The University of Akron while they worked in the residence halls. After graduating with a bachelor of science degree in accounting, Beverly began a career in public accounting, later working for Monterey Federal Credit Union, GE Capital and finishing her CPA career in 2003 as Corporate Controller for Graphic Enterprises, Inc.

As a principled, ethical leader, Mark has set a tone of excellence throughout his professional career. He has held several finance related roles at the J. M. Smucker Company, where he currently holds the position of Vice Chair and CFO. Early in his career, he learned that a master’s degree would be a beneficial next step to build upon his leadership experience and accounting degree and, in 1993, earned his MBA.

Mark and Beverly currently reside in Jackson Township, Ohio, with their two daughters, Kristi and Karli.

Mark and Beverly believe strongly in the power of education and its ability to impact future generations. Candidates for The Mark R. and Beverly E. Belgya Cap & Gown Scholarship must be enrolled in °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ’s College of Business Administration and majoring in business. Applicants may be full or part-time students and must demonstrate persistence toward degree completion (with a minimum of 100 credit hours completed), financial need, and have a GPA of 2.8 or higher.

The College of Business Administration Scholarship Committee will select recipients. The Committee will consider factors such as financial need, credit hours completed, GPA, and a student’s individual situation.
