Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Thornton, Kaitlyn M. Emergency Fund for Nursing Students
The Kaitlyn M. Thornton Emergency Fund for Nursing Students was established in 2010 by members of the law firm of Renner Kenner Greive Bobak Taylor & Weber Co. LPA, as well as family and friends of Kaitlyn Thornton. This fund was established in memory of Ms. Thornton and honors her passion for nursing. The Kaitlyn M. Thornton Emergency Fund for Nursing Students will provide meaningful assistance to nursing students who are facing economic hardships. It is hoped that this fund will offer encouragement and inspiration to student beneficiaries to persevere and succeed in their quest to become a nurse.
The Kaitlyn M. Thornton Emergency Fund for Nursing Students is to be used to provide assistance to a student enrolled in The University of Akron's College of Nursing who demonstrates economic need. Monies will be distributed as long as funds are available, and award determinations will be made by the director of the College of Nursing's Office of Student Affairs. Award recipients may use funds for tuition, books, and/or personal expenses, including utilities, shelter, food, and/or other unforeseen bona fide emergency expenses that may arise and otherwise make it difficult for the students to continue their nursing studies.
