Named scholarships & funds
When it comes to earning a college degree, the greatest obstacle can be funding.
For this reason, The University of Akron is pleased for the opportunity each year to assist talented, deserving students achieve their dreams, thanks to more than 1,300 named scholarships established through the kindness and generosity of thousands of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni and friends, corporations, and foundations.
Scholarships truly are the best way to ensure that today’s students persist to graduation. Scholarships allow students to enroll full time and remain focused on their studies; they also reduce drop-out rates, decrease the stress of student loans, and shorten the road to graduation.
If you are interested in making a significant contribution to student success, please consider a gift to scholarships. You may also establish a named scholarship at The University of Akron, which can be created to honor a living person, in memory of a loved one, or to contribute to the growth of an area of study.

Hollis, Maggi Nursing Scholarship
The Maggi Hollis Nursing Scholarship was established in 2024 by her husband, Barry Hollis, to support undergraduate students in the School of Nursing experiencing financial need. Barry created the scholarship as a surprise for his wife to honor her contributions to the nursing profession.
Maggi is a 1988 graduate of The University of Akron and a 36-year employee at Summa Health Systems. She is a critical care nurse and has been on the rapid response team for the past 10 years. Maggi graduated from Ellet High School in Akron, Ohio. Barry is a 1990 graduate of The University of Akron and has worked at PNC Bank for 35 years. He graduated from Tallmadge High School in Tallmadge, Ohio. Maggi and Barry have a daughter, Jennifer, who is an emergency room nurse at Summa Health Green Medical Center. Maggi and Barry currently live in Green, Ohio.
The Maggi Hollis Nursing Scholarship was established as part of We Rise Together, the Campaign for The University of Akron.
The Maggi Hollis Nursing Scholarship supports full- or part-time undergraduate students within the School of Nursing who are experiencing financial need. Although no minimum GPA is required, recipients must be in good academic standing. Funds will be used to offset costs associated with tuition and fees. First preference should be given to graduates of Ellet High School, Tallmadge High School, and Green High School.
Nursing faculty may recommend recipients based on a student's exceptional compassion for their chosen profession and dedication to patient care; however, the final selection of the recipient will be made by The University of Akron Scholarship Committee in the Office of Student Financial Aid.
