2024 Achievement Awards: College of Engineering and Polymer Science

04/15/2024

The College of Engineering and Polymer Science (CEPS) is pleased to announce this year’s CEPS Achievement Awards winners. These awards honor faculty, staff and professional staff for their contributions to CEPS. The recipients were recognized at an award ceremony held in the Auburn Science and Engineering Center, and each awardee received a plaque and monetary prize.

“The difficult decisions that had to be made by the selection committees for the Louis A. Hill, Chemstress Teaching, Outstanding Staff and Outstanding Service Fostering Student Success awards reflect on the focus and dedication of our entire faculty and staff to the teaching, research and service missions of our College,” shared Dr. Craig Menzemer, dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science. “Every one of us takes pride in our students, alumni and the impactful work we carry out.”

Congratulations to the following awardees:

Louis A. Hill Award

This year’s recipient is Dr. Yilmaz Sozer, distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering. Dr. Sozer has been influential in mentoring his students and advancing his research programs at The University of Akron. He is a leader in his field and recognized by his peers. He continues to nurture and cultivate new partnerships with industrial leaders, create new innovations for the good of society, and translate his publications and research into patentable, commercial works.

Chemstress Teaching Award

This year’s recipient is Dr. Ala Abbas, professor of civil engineering. Dr. Abbas was chosen by students because of his efforts to “tailor classes to real-world experience, provide personalized academic support to students, and encourage soft skillsets prevalent in the workplace.” He has positively impacted student learning and enhanced the educational experiences of our students. As one student said, “He is by far the most exceptional person I have met at The University of Akron and truly makes me want to come into class every single day ready to learn and work.”

Outstanding Staff Award

This year’s recipient is Sarah Hoge, director of advising services. Sarah manages the CEPS team of professional academic advisors as well as advising her own caseload of cybersecurity majors. Her patience, knowledge of the College's history and programs, and dedication to student success were noted by multiple individuals. She embodies the qualities that this award represents and is deserving of the honor.

Outstanding Service Award Fostering Student Success

This year’s inaugural recipient is Dr. Bi-min Zhang Newby, professor of chemical engineering and associate chair of graduate studies for the Department of Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering. She is an inspiring mentor who has improved the well-being and success of students at all levels. She embodies inclusivity, positivity, empathy and responsiveness in all her interactions. The selection committee commends Dr. Newby for fostering connections between upperclassmen and younger students and nurturing a sense of belonging.
