Anti-Shivering Device for Therapeutic Hypothermia

On April 27, 31 senior students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering presented 11 medical device projects designed and developed to streamline medical procedures and address surgical and clinical needs. These projects were sponsored by local hospitals and built on five years of fundamentals learned in class and experiential learning opportunities such as undergraduate research, co-op and design teams.

Congratulations to the following students for their winning projects:

Clinical mentor: Dr. Richard Hertle from Akron Children’s Hospital
Faculty and staff mentors: Audrey Nguyen, Hossein Tavana, Steve Paterson

This project was for a clinical need to reduce or prevent shivering without putting excessive strain on the body while under medically induced hypothermia.

This project was for a clinical need to improve delivery of liquid medicine into the neonatal eye to prevent retinal detachment and lower risk for bacterial infection and drug misplacement.

"We would like to thank the mentors from Akron Children's Hospital, Akron General Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and Summa Hospital for their guidance and expertise," said Dr. Hossein Tavana, professor and department chair. "I am proud of our faculty, staff and students for their dedication to teaching and learning. We are confident in the skills and knowledge of our graduating students to excel in their careers."
