This April, 106 students and two faculty members were inducted into The Order of the Engineer an organization dedicated to fostering ethics and professionalism in the engineering profession. Inductees recited an obligation and received a stainless-steel ring, worn on the fifth finger of the working hand, as a reminder of their commitments.

The Order of the Engineer Ring Ceremony is an important moment, says Dr. Joan Carletta, associate dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science. This is when our students acknowledge the deep responsibility that engineers hold towards the health, welfare and safety of society.

The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. Every new member makes the obligation to uphold devotion to the standards and dignity of the engineering profession.

The ring is a symbol of professionalism and ethics, says Schuyler Spivey, B.S. Aerospace Engineering 20. It also is a reminder of an engineers service to others, whether thats through volunteerism or helping the people on my team.

Congratulations to these honorable students and faculty.
