Recently, 188 students participated in one or more activities during First-Year Festivities, a series of events held from September 16th to 20th designed to welcome and support first-year students at the College of Engineering and Polymer Science (CEPS).
The series included events such as Welcome Lunch and CEPS Resources, Thriving in College: Strategies for Navigating Academic Challenges and Staying Motivated by the Counseling & Testing Center, Campus Resources and Financial Literacy with ZipAssist, the Alumni Speaker Series, and Pizza and Peer Connections.
Hosted by the Increasing Diversity in Engineering Academics (IDEAs) Program and the Women in Engineering (WIE) Program, First-Year Festivities focused on connecting students with campus resources, faculty, staff, alumni, and fellow undergraduate and graduate students. This initiative aimed to enhance the first-year experience and support the colleges efforts to retain first-year students through its First Year Success Programs.
Student Reflections on First-Year Festivities
My experience with the First-Year Festivities was incredibly positive and impactful. From financial literacy to academic support, each session was both informative and engaging. The individuals who managed and arranged these sessions were incredibly helpful and approachable, making it easy to engage and ask questions. These events not only helped me feel more connected to the university community but also gave me the tools to navigate my first year with confidence. I am grateful for the opportunity and support provided during this experience. Tahmina
The experience was a very positive one. I feel that I gained lots of knowledge when it came to learning all of the resources and supportive members that we have in our community. Peter
These events allowed me to feel more connected to my peers and helped me understand that there are resources to help me on campus. David
This was a great idea. As a first-year student, being away from home, you do not know what to expect, especially with such a hefty major. However, this program made me feel extremely supported and welcomed into not only the university but also the College of Engineering and Polymer Science! Gabrielle
First-Year Festivities, a new initiative by IDEAs and WIE, focused on building connections and creating a supportive communityvalues that are core to the IDEAs and WIE programs, shared Dr. Neete Saha, Director of Diversity and Inclusion at CEPS, who leads the programs. Thank you to all the faculty and staff for promoting the events and encouraging students to participate in First-Year Festivities. And thank you to all our guest speakers, including university colleagues, alumni/industry partners, and the students who participated in the events.
