June 17, 2024

Hello, University of Akron community, and happy summer! About a month ago, I was selected as president of this wonderful university. I remain honored and humbled.

Over the past month, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of our most invested stakeholders. On May 23rd, more than 250 faculty, staff, administrators and students joined me in Buchtel Hall for a meet and greet event.

On June 13th, hundreds of °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ alumni met in Cleveland for our first alumni social of the summer. What a fantastic way to connect the present with the past.

Through both of these events, people shared their ongoing excitement about The University of Akron and offered words of encouragement as I endeavor to lead us.

In talking to current and past °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ students and personnel, I know I am not alone. In fact, I am inspired by the fact that so many dedicated individuals view The University of Akron as their educational home… and are keeping such a watchful eye over it.

If we haven’t yet had the chance to meet, please accept this invitation to attend a future event, visit me on campus, or simply send me an introductory note.

Not only do I regard my presidency as an honor, but I recognize the great responsibility that accompanies leading this world-class institution. Because of that, I wanted to send out a message and make numerous assurances.

First, as I’ve previously mentioned, our leadership team and I are methodically addressing budgetary concerns.

While financial issues are not unique to °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ during this era in public education, we nevertheless see opportunities and solutions.

Second, we will continue to provide our students with the vast array of opportunities they enjoy both inside and outside of our classrooms. I believe that professional experiences are the x-factor that will give our students increased marketability and more meaningful careers.

Finally, the University primarily exists for students. Thus, I am committed to growing enrollment, engaging in purposeful recruitment efforts, and retaining the students we have through delivering the product we’ve promised.

Through the guiding principles of experience and growth and the strategic planning initiatives of flourishing people, lifelong learning, and social impact, we will equip The University of Akron for another hundred and fifty years and more of continued success.

Whatever you’re doing this summer, I wish you joy in doing so. Whether you are teaching, researching, gardening, or simply relaxing, please take comfort in the fact that °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ will be ready for a productive fall semester.

It is a time for renewed culture and transformational identity.

As °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ’s 19th President, I am here to listen, to learn, and to guide the plan to ensure our future. Go Zips!
