Reading Placement Testing For University of Akron Students
Placement testing helps determine the appropriate first course for you to take in the University of Akron’s course sequence. Your ACT/SAT scores and choice of major determine your placement testing requirements. Not every student will be required to take placement tests, each student is evaluated on an individual basis.
You will receive your specific placement testing requirement via email no more than three business days after receiving your Advising & Registration Confirmation Email containing your orientation date. This email will be sent to all email addresses on file, including your °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ email address. Your placement exam(s) must be completed prior to your Advising & Registration program. Failure to complete any exam(s) prior to your Advising & Registration program could result in a delay in your course registration.
Why do I need testing?
You are required to take the Reading placement exam prior to your Advising & Registration program if one of the following applies:
- Your ACT reading score is 17 or below
- Your SAT (redesigned) evidence based reading and writing is 470 or below

How do I complete?
- Reading Placement Tests must be taken in-person on main campus at Computer Based Assessment and Evaluation, in Schrank Hall North 152, or at Wayne College or Medina County University Center.

- Proctoring of initial placement testing at °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ is free for students.
- You must bring a valid photo ID and a copy of your testing email from nsotesting@uakron.edu.
- If you are an incoming student and have questions regarding your placement testing requirement, please email nsotesting@uakron.edu with your name, student ID number (7 digits, no letters), and specific question.
- If you are far from °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ campuses and prefer to test at another location, you can find approved testing locations for Accuplacer reading and writing tests using the Accuplacer Test Center Locator:

- Leaving the city blank, input your zip code along with preferred radius.
- After finding a location, reach out to that test center to confirm you can schedule there. Any fees charged by that site for proctoring are your responsibility.
- Once confirmed, send an email to testing@uakron.edu from your °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ email address for staff to generate a remote testing voucher. Both you and the testing center will receive an email with voucher information.
Do you need test accommodations?
If you have a disability and require accommodations to complete the placement tests, you must contact the Office of Accessibility no later than one month prior to when you intend to complete the exam(s).
