Want to become a teacher?

If you are seeking your initial teacher licensure, either a bachelor's degree or a master's degree with licensure, you should review the process below.

Please speak with an undergraduate advisor to ensure you complete any necessary pre-admission coursework.

Undergraduate

Prospective °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ students:

  1. Apply to the University of Akron
  2. Upon acceptance to the university, you can contact a  in the School of Education to help guide you

Current °µºÚ±¬ÁÏ students:

      Admission is done automatically through the Degree Progress Report once you have met all pre admission requirements.


Graduate

Prospective graduate students:

  1. Apply to the Graduate School at The University of Akron
  2. Apply to the the School of Education

Those students enrolled in another academic college within the University of Akron wishing to complete degree requirements in the School of Education should see their advisor to initiate an intercollege transfer (ICT) to the College of Arts & Sciences. Students planning to complete teacher education as part of their degree requirements in another college need not complete an ICT.

A grade point average of 2.5 or better overall and 2.5 or better overall in prerequisite credit hours from specific courses identified by School Departments.

Evidence of competency in reading comprehension and writing as shown by one of the following:

  • A grade of "C" or higher in a course that meets the University's General Education English Composition I and II requirement.
  • Master’s with Licensure and Post-baccalaureate students are exempt from this requirement by virtue of their Bachelor’s Degree.

Evidence of competency in mathematics as shown by one of the following:

  • Successful completion of the University's General Education mathematics requirement.
  • The Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or computerized version (CBT), scoring at least 172 in mathematics (testing information is available in Zook 002).
  • Master’s with Licensure and Post-baccalaureate students are exempt from this requirement by virtue of their Bachelor’s Degree.

Students are responsible for obtaining a current Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background check, and having the results sent to their preferred personal mailing address.  Please refer to the link below for additional information.

How to add a licensure or endorsement

If you already hold a teaching license/certificate:

  • to add an additional area of licensure or an endorsement, to your current teaching license/certificate.

Applying for a graduate degree in Education

To apply for a graduate degree, you must apply to the Graduate School at The University of Akron, as well as the School of Education. These should be submitted simultaneously.
